Book reviews

Book Reviewsby Maxine Nicholas

A few years ago, I reviewed two books by Martin Laird on Contemplative Prayer. They are “Into the Silent Land” and “A Sunlit Absence”, both of which are still available. You can find these reviews on our Fellowship Website.  The third book in this trilogy by Martin Laird is “An Ocean of Lightwhich was published in 2019.  This is a gem of a book which focusses primarily on Contemplation, Transformation Healing, and Liberation. It is a beautifully written, thoughtful, and honest account of what it means to face oneself and our shared world in the silent depths of prayer.   “An Ocean of Light” is published by Oxford University Press and available at most Christian bookshops at the price of £11.69.

Praying our Goodbyes” by Joyce Rupp, is a remarkable and insightful book about coming to terms with loss.  She is a renowned author of many spiritual books and is an experienced Christian guide.  “Praying Our Goodbyes” is about the spirituality of change and covers many different types of loss and bereavement, from the loss of a loved one, loss of a job, physical disability, and anything that has given life meaning and value.  It is about “the experience of leaving behind and moving on, stories of union and separation that are written in all our hearts”.  It is a deeply healing book, and brings us to the point of non-dualistic and transformative love.

“Praying our Goodbyes” is published by Ave Maria Press and priced at £9.25
